Tanu Weds Manu Returns – A happy ending (?) #SpoilerAlert

I was too excited to watch this movie like everyone else. Promos were great and hilarious. I and my friend decided to watch a morning show since we are now scared to bet our money on some movies where expectations are already high. The comedy timing is awesome. Kananga rocks. She has convincingly portrayed both characters so strongly that she makes you fall in love with Datto’s genuineness and Tanu’s bindhast attitude. And of course Pappi and other characters make you laugh hard with their perfect comedy timing. I was supposed to keep my brain out of the cinema hall, but I forgot. And believe me, you should keep it out if you want to enjoy it. I had a tear or two in my eyes after watching this comedy movie (don’t judge :-D) which ends with Datto’s outburst (technically not the last scene).

I don’t know if I am only one to feel this since internet is flooded with how good the movie is. Is there anyone who felt that movie was actually insult to Datto’s character?

With every single scene of Datto and Manu together, I thought he was falling for Datto’s courage , attitude and the way she handled everything , the way she stood up for not only  herself but for her loved ones. She was a lioness, not a good looking one but someone who knew how to be a today’s generation woman. On the other hand, Tanu was roaming around with Exes, drinking and looking awesome in her sexy clothes, giving attitude to everyone around her (she was hilarious though). And I don’t want to judge her for that, but director himself judges her in a scene where she slams Datto for not being beautiful enough for Manu. Datto replies to Tanu that how her identity is limited to her beauty and how she is not even capable to earn money to buy her own undergarments (the best scene in the movie).

Manu - let’s not talk about him. I love Madhavan for his cuteness and that was the only reason I could stand that character.  The character is absolutely spineless and had nothing to say in the whole movie other than giving “pyar bhare” looks to Datto and Tanu in alternate scenes.

Forget about the logic why Manu selects Tanu. Indian audience is well trained not to search that logic in such movies. But seriously dude ! Are you that dumb to drag a well-educated, independent girl to shaadi ka mandap and then make a sad face while taking saat phere , then make “her” ask you if you want to go ahead with this commitment? Really? I found it pretty insulting to the whole story. For a moment, I thought he will say “YES” and break my stereotypical expectation, but unfortunately he didn’t.
It is happy ending movie right - “Tanu is back with Manu”?

What I took from movie with me (maybe I was wrong that I even tried to take something from this movie than just laugh it out, but I already apologized for not keeping my brain outside cinema hall) --

Self-driven independent girls like Datto should never fall for spineless guy like Manu :-D .
66.66* % people are fine with losing self-respect in love because love is remedy to all life problems (Jadu ki jadibuti).
Girls like Datto get respect from everyone at the end of the day but nobody tries to be fair with them.
Tanu also almost lost self-respect by dancing in Manu’s barat , but heyyy , who cares , she looks hot in that song :-D
Girls like Datto are supposed to stand up for themselves, because society is least bothered about it. They have to cry within locked rooms because they are supposed to be brave and not heartbroken.

Maybe i need to revise my concepts of happy ending. Or some might say "Laugh and forget , itna sochane wali movie nahi hai woh" , and maybe they are right :)

*66.66 is cause 2 (tanu, manu) out of 3 (tanu, manu, datto) people in the movie lose their self-respect for love.

  1. Good analysis there Snehal...:)

The movie leaves a bitter after taste. It was lauded as a women empowerment movie by some circles, but i saw women either behaving rashly/irrationaly (Tanu) who acts foolishly strong but is too vulnerable, or still going after the wrong man who liked you since you just look like his estranged wife (Datto). The only things i will like the movie for are the comic punches - some of them were just too good. And of course, the character of Datto who is adorable as a person. Full marks to Kangana for portraying that character - Tanu is still Kangana, but Datto is something else. I also feel there were some very exemplary artful scenes in the movie - one is when Datto sings the english song in Haryanvi accent. It has a fresh feeling to it, and i could not stop myself from falling for that not so good looking girl. Also, the scene where the old song has been used while Tanu goes out to meet Manu in the night - loved the way the emotions of the song had been used to the full there. As far as Manu is concerned, you really don't know what to do about that character - no weight at all (except the physical weight of course;)). Rather you hate him for his relaxed attitude, and how he chickens out at the last moment. If the director wanted to make a point that men are spineless by portraying him like that, i feel this was a very unnatural way of doing it.

  2. Well written. Movies are reflection of the psycology of the society and ends in a way tht majority like. As a ideal wife or bahu may be datto is yet nt accptable for majority of ppl

  4. Very true Snehal. I completely agree with your views. Even my eyes were wet to see Datto cry. Any progress in Manu and Datto's marriage made me feel 'Kya chal raha hai bhaai..' as I knew in the end Manu is going to go back to Tanu; its a Bolywood movie indeed..
The end is complete disrespect to Datto's belief and love for Manu. She stands by him so much. She opposes Tanu's friend saying 'let Sharma ji tell me that he does not want to marry me'. She also meets him before baraat to confirm his decision. Manu, a spineless character, can't stand by his own feelings. Imagine how society would react for such a situation when a marriage ends in the mandap itself. And all the implications are to be suffered by the girl.. Well, a girl like Datto will take it sportingly but completely unfair for her genuineness.
Kangana's acting, the comedy timing, the musical punches, other characters etc everything is awesome. However, the movie does has a grey shade at the end..

  5. Snehal... I completely agree with your analysis .. It was upsetting ending... I was crying with Datto and at the same time fuming in anger over the manu's character ..

  8. With due respect, what I felt is somewhat different. Datto's character is so strongly developed that you fall for it. Writer Himanshu Sharma must have kept in mind that the viewers must have got used to the not-so-sensible behaviors of the protagonists. Just look at the first part: Tanu was behaving like a spoiled brat all over the movie but Manu still fell fpr her. Director Anand L. Rai has this talent of putting such unconvincing characters and their equally unconvincing actions in very convincing way.. (look at Ranjhanaa as an example. Was Dhanush's character justified?) Tanu weds Manu returns has a climax which would have been written by keeping in mind that marriage cant be broken so easily. Just as Datto precisely puts, "I am a sportswoman. I either win gold medal or lose. But I dont like consolation prize." She had realized that Manu still had feelings for Tanu. She has actually made her entire character memorable in the movie. The very fact that we all are having such discussion itself shows how much we love her.

  9. "Director Anand L. Rai has this talent of putting such unconvincing characters and their equally unconvincing actions in very convincing way" I agree on this part totally :-)
I loved the movie and its characters. They are exaggerated , every single one , that's the style if i understand correctly.
Only part i do not agree with the cliched ending and it absolutely puts me off after watching fabulous scene between Datto and Tanu.
For a split second you want to believe - May the writer think love isn't remedy to all problems. Manu might have liked Datto for being Datto ( Datto and Manu's scenes keep indicating that) ,somehow it does not synch with ending for me. Ending feels like a dramatic twist and too stereotypical fairy tale ending to just justify the title !

  10. Well I want to watch the movie again.. Or rather again and again.. It's the highly earned respect for writer Himanshu Sharma and director Anand L. Rai that is preventing me from criticing any smallest part of any of their films. I remember how I debated with my roomies during our college days over Manu trying to marry Tanu. I had nearly made all attempts to prove my point that Jimmy Shergil's physically disable sister deserved Manu and he should marry her rather than running behind Tanu.

  11. But then it is uncertainty of human heart that triumphs many a times and makes you do such things. This is the beauty of Love. Not necessarily there should be a sense in love. This is whya Dhanush kept on loving Sonam (read :Dumb girl) and ignored Swara Bhaskar till the end. If rumors are to be believed, Kangana Ranaut was supposed to do the Swara Bhaskar part in Ranjhanaa. Anyways, all we can say is Manu had a very good opportunity to choose between a sensible Datto and moody Tanu. He made his decision.
